Logs

About the home package:  This is a customized version of Southland Log Home's "Caroline II" model.  I decided in an instant to, not only build a dream home, but to build the Caroline II log home after walking through the model of this home.  Southland erected the model home on the exit ramp of I-95 & Rt. 3  in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Caroline II is a two story with a balcony overlooking a great room, a master bedroom on the main floor and three bedrooms on the upper floor.  Other logs types are available such as round, 'D' shaped, and so on.  Pine is the standard wood type used.

My customized log package will complete a 4,600 sq. foot home (including basement) with a full wrap-around porch on top of a full walkout basement.  The logs are 6x12 dovetail Western Red Cedar logs shipped in from the west coast by special order.  This added about %20 to the cost of the package but it was worth every cent.

Water Stains

I had a big problem with water stains on the logs from it being open to the weather for so long during construction.

To clean the Yellow Pine wood I found that a 50/50 mix of water and bleach works best on the yellow pine beams that are used on the inside and wraparound deck.

To clean the Western Red Cedar logs I found that Thompson's Deck Cleaner & Brightener works wonders without fading the color on the red cedar.  If you have cedar wood make sure it's the one for redwood & cedar.  The other stuff just bleaches it out.

A light power washing for the rinse of the deck brightener worked best in my case.
